After moving to Canada with his family, Ryan continued his violin studies in Toronto. Later, Ryan enrolled at the University of Western Ontario, Don Wright Faculty of Music with the Scholarship of Excellence to further study music theory and violin. During his time at the university, he studied violin with Steven Kruse,  the principal violist of the Kansas City Symphony, Flint Symphony, and Windsor Symphony, and Virginia Barron, a member of the Chicago Symphony. He also studied music composition with Canadian composers, Omar Daniel, and Paul Frehner.
